Enigin Ghana

What People Think

When people think of Ghana, various things tend to crop up in their mind: one thing I often hear is that Ghana is meant to be a very dangerous place, and the other thing I hear is that it is supposed to be somewhere to avoid because of this, because you won’t be able to go ten feet without someone wanting to steal your wallet (as if Heathrow Parking is any better? I have a good friend who was mugged at Heathrow airport while trying to reverse park…). This makes me laugh. I mean every place has its good and bad qualities, and that’s not to say that it is any better or worse than somewhere else. I suppose there are certain people, though, who will always have the same opinion and it won’t be changed in any way soon.

Another thing I hear is about energy efficiency: some people assume – usually with no real facts to back their argument up – that places like Ghana aren’t as energy efficient. To them I say look around your modern home and tell me how you are MORE efficient? This usually provokes laughter followed by a short pause. My point, I tell them, is that many people who don’t have as many luxury things are actually more efficient than the most technological societies out there. This is because instead of relying on machines to wash their dishes they just do it themselves.

The last point I usually bring up is about health and fitness: some of the people I have met in Ghana have been the most conscious of this, and a lot more so than many of my English friends who feed on fast food takeaways and the like. In other words, some people may be poorer than others, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are worse at living life.

Give me sunshine

I have just returned from two weeks of busy business and pleasure travel in the UK and Spain looking primarily at solar heating and solar based refrigeration technology that can be imported into Africa. I loved the trip but have to be honest and say I enjoyed Barcelona and Madrid more than London. Not like there is anything wrong with London, far from it it is a great city, but the sun shines so much more in Spain than it does in the UK. And it is not like you can dial up sun on the cheap and living in Ghana I like my sunshine.
One of the retailers I was in discussion with was a big fan of discounting to attract interest although I am not sure how I can take comet.co.uk discount codes and utilize that within energy conservation unless maybe I can bulk import and bulk sell out to other African countries.
Anyway off topic but on fun I have to say apart from recommending you all to look at the emerging technologies I would recommend you to take a trip to Barcelona. Man what a city!
The first day I got in there was a rest day and I headed from the airport to my hotel and then straight out onto Las Ramblas which was alive and buzzing. I eventually headed into the old quarter and was amazed by the beauty of the place and the tiny streets overlooked by tall old buildings. After eventually hitting the sea for a bite to eat I wondered back in and stumbled across a massive street party celebrating the devil with fireworks as I have never seen before. Man that city knows how to party.
I won’t spoil it by telling you more as hopefully you will make it down there yourself… you won’t regret it.

Singapore, here we come

Singapore, here we come

I had always seen all these tall claims in lucky draws about winning this prize or that prize but could never bring myself to believe that someone actually ever wins these things. It was just such a huge coincidence that I had gone for some last minute gift shopping with a colleague since we were going to our boss’s house for the first time for dinner. At the department store there was a lucky draw sponsored by Singapore Airlines for customer shopping above a particular limit and my friend just happened to coax me into filling out the draw sheet against my purchase which I did ever so reluctantly. Then I had just forgotten about it because of my previous reservations about such contests.

Just two days later I got a call, while in office, saying that I have won an all expenses paid trip to Singapore! It was the buzz in the entire office that day. My girlfriend was delirious – suddenly all the money she’d been saving for our holiday was freed up for botox haywards heath. So off we went to Singapore about two weeks later. The hotel which was provided was a three star somewhere on Orchard Road so we had made our own booking at the Pan Pacific near the Marina. Nice hotel with a lovely view of the Marina, the Esplanade and the Merlion but there was this constant noise happening all throughout the day and night since there was renovation work going on in the lobby.

I can see why the airline was pushing us to go, when they were, because no one would visit Singapore at that time, it was always raining since the monsoon season had set in. We saw the usual which was Sentosa Island, Night Safari, Orchard Road, Bird Park, etc– The funniest incident was when we had gone to see the Night Safari. There is a tram which takes you around the park with a guided tour in which a very well trained operator makes the ride very interesting with her enunciation and diction. She hyped up our tour to the section of the Indian Buffalo to make it seem as if we were seeing some exotic animal. Not too be bad for a free holiday!

Kenya Festivals - The Events That Bring In Tourists From All Over

We are often too busy with our lives of work, lattes, pine furniture and meeting friends down the pub to think about going somewhere truly original for our next holiday, but have you ever considered Kenya? One thing Kenya is well known for is its events and festivals. These are what make up the real culture of the country. Many travelers come to this country just for the festivals alone. By watching and participating in the Kenya festivals, one truly does have a remarkable experience that will stick with them for years to come.

The Kenya Tourism Week

On September 27th, World Tourism Day is celebrated in Kenya. Kenya became a member of the World Tourism Day back in 1991 and ever since then this festival is celebrated. Tourists are provided with cheap flights, dinner parties, free trips to several sights and more.

This is an annual in which Aero Club of East Africa organized. During this event, tourists can watch different models of aircrafts such as the Landrover Hawker Hunter, Whisper Class, F-5E ’Tiger’and the Pilatus Pc 12. This is one of the fastest growing air shows in Africa.

Safari Rally

Another well known event is known as the Safari Rally. World Motor Sports Council organized this event along with Safari Rally Kenya Ltd. It use to be held only on Easter holidays, however, the date has now changed for unknown reasons. Interested drivers worldwide can register to participate in this event. Each driver will need to be sponsored and fueled by a well known and recognized company. This event lasts for over 4 to 5 days.

These are just some of the popular events and festivals you will find in Kenya. People travel from all over to come see these events and for good reason. They are exciting and keep people entertained. These few events do not even touch what you can expect to see in Kenya.

Cuba

Cuba

Cuba is an amazing place to be – I remember visiting Cuba last year just after I drove across the US in a car hired from cheap car rental usa, and thought there is nothing better left to see. However, I saw a country full of extremes – both beautiful and darkened by misery, both developed and supressed by communism. Although my feelings for Cuba were quite contraversial, my two-weeks stay there was almost as amazing as the most beautiful places I have been to.

The first thing to mention is the national kitchen in Cuba – I must admit almost every night I overate – the delicious meals the locals have to offer are quite satisfactory and extremely tasty. The breads and the spicy souces would make you even happier because hardly is there a more distinctvie kitchen with so many varieties of the both. So just spending time in the restaurants made me quite amazed – the Cubian food was truely one of the best I had the chance to taste.

Another thing that fascinated me was the lifestyle – no matter poor or rich, the Cubians are really cheered people. The streets of Havana are always loud and crowded – people would be dancing on the street, musicians would play live just for enterteinment, jazz music would come from almost every open window, small children would run after you offering you their services to take you to the best place for the night. You would be astonished when you visit a salsa club, and you would see the vivid energy of these people, their smiles are almost as addictive as their food and no matter how late, they will always find the way to have fun.

So apart from the usual things like shopping and beaches, Cuba can offer spectacular nightlife and amazing food that every tourist would be satisfied with.

Two Tips to Get The Most Out of Your Next Cruise

Two Tips to Get The Most Out of Your Next Cruise

I’ve had the opportunity to enjoy two cruises. One was to Alaska and the other to the Bahamas. The destinations couldn’t be more opposite, the cruises were on two completely different cruise lines, and I traveled one with a large group and one with a small group. Basically, the two trips were complete opposite, yet I’ve learned a couple things about cruising in general that everyone should know.

First of all, what should you look for in a room when booking a cruise? I had the opportunity to stay in an absolute bare minimum room with a tiny circle for a window, and I also stayed in the largest suite on the ship where an entire wall was floor to ceiling windows with a view of the ocean ahead. While the suite was wonderful to walk into on boarding day, I can honestly say it wasn’t at all necessary or enjoyed enough. Very little time is spent in the cabin when you’re on a cruise; you’ll just miss way too much! I spent just as much time in the tiny cabin as I did in the suite, which was just long enough to crawl in and out of bed. So if you’re looking to save a bit of money, there’s a lot to be saved when choosing a room. It’s even possible to get a room that has an obscured view, which means there’s a pole in front of the window or something similar. If you want to see the ocean and the wonderful views a cruise gives you, go walk the deck or sit in a chair on the lido deck. Don’t worry about splurging on your cabin.

The second thing I learned through my cruise adventures is you don’t have to go to every formal dinner. Typically, you have a scheduled dinner time every evening in which you have a chair reserved for a gourmet five course meal. This is a wonderful experience and I would definitely suggest going to at least one, but keep in mind there are many opportunities to eat. There are other dining rooms you can eat at that are quicker and more laid back, there’s constantly food being served on one deck or another, and there’s always a buffet that serves meat, vegetarian, or chicken recipes, to attend. So don’t feel strapped down to the formal, set time dinner that is available to you. You can explore the other food options which will also give you more time to enjoy the other things the ship has to offer.

Through my two very different cruises, I learned two very important things. Between the choosing of a cabin and when and where to eat, I know how to get the most out of my future cruises, and I hope this advice can help some of you out there preparing to go on a cruise.

The nightmare of a cancelled flight

The nightmare of a cancelled flight

However well you plan your trip abroad, there are always some things that you can’t plan for. On a recent trip to the South of France a few friends and I arrived at the airport in plenty of time. We joined the appropriate budget airline queue and we waited. And we waited. And we waited. Eventually, after some hours had passed, our flight was called forward, so we checked in and waved goodbye to our luggage with a definite sense of trepidation, as the departure time for our flight had now passed – something was clearly wrong. We then waited even longer for our gate number to be called, and then longer again at the gate. Until, at around the time we should have been landing in France, we were informed that our flight had been cancelled, as the staff had now gone into overtime. So we collected our luggage from the carousel and attempted to complain… only there was no-one to complain to. Eventually we had to book our own replacement flights, to take us out the next morning, and find accommodation in the airport. This comprised sleeping 6 people in a twin room at the extortionately expensive airport hotel. We may as well have looked into camper vans for sale considering the price we ended up paying…
The next morning our replacement flight went smoothly, and we landed on French soil on time. However we then had another issue… we had flown to Marseilles, and our original flight had been to Nice. This wouldn’t have mattered too much, had we not reserved hire cars at the original destination. Our hire company had no cars available to take instead, so our only option was to take public transport from Marseilles to Nice, to pick up our reserved cars. This turned out to involve two shuttle buses, three walks, and a lengthy, but beautiful, train journey. We then picked up the cars and drove to our villa. Only 30 hours later than we expected to be!
